OK. So here's the thing - you think if the Caribbean and you think white, sandy beaches, right? Well, my friend, there are no such beaches here in Corozal, Belize. Perhaps there are some in other parts of the country, but where we are = no dice.
There are several places to get in the water, but you don't get that long stretch of white hot sand really anywhere around here. Hence, the manmade beaches, like this--
But, that also means you're not constantly battling with sand everywhere either. So that's a plus. There is really short grass (technically I think it's a vine that weaves in and out of the ground) that makes a nice padding for bare feet. It was definitely not what I was expecting of this little oasis, but it's OK. We should be exploring more of the country soon and we'll see what the rest of the locations have to offer.
The water here in Corozal Bay is awesome. It is warm and it is shallow. Check out these pics of Nate and Cailey swimming. They are standing on the bottom and we can still see most of their bodies. Even yards and yards out... crazy, right?
It was also Nate's idea to go swimming today. Anyone who knows him, knows he doesn't like water. And he's doing just fine here!
We also took a trip to the main dock today. They have ferry rides that will take you to San Pedro or Caye Caulker, which I think we will do sometime next week. It takes a couple of hours and costs about $45 US round trip. Otherwise, it's a short plane ride for about twice the cost.
And we found a pretty cool place to eat near here, called Scotty's. I had a bloody mary and ceviche. Nate had a salty dog, his drink of choice (that's a grapefruit & vodka, which they have on most menu's here... and basically everyone in Colorado needs to be told what they are..), and split chicken fajitas with Cailey. Oh my were the fajitas good! Served with some spicy refried beans that made me question my choice of entree. :)
All in all, we are starting to feel more comfortable here. It is a very real possibility that we will be able to stay here for a while and not go running back to the U.S. anytime soon.
More to come!
XOXO,
Charla
